Summary
Mammillaria rhodantha, commonly known as Rainbow Pincushion, is an evergreen succulent native to the arid highlands of central Mexico. It is a small, globular cactus typically ranging from 6 to 12 inches (15–30 cm) in height. The plant may grow in small clumps or as a solitary individual. Its spines are arranged in a distinctive pattern, with the lower half bearing white or gray spines that give the appearance of aging, while the upper part of the plant body is adorned with white woolly hairs. Rainbow Pincushion is renowned for its vibrant deep-pink to purple flowers that bloom profusely from spring to autumn, producing an orange-brown seed. The long flowering period and the colorful spines contribute to its ornamental value.
This species is favored for its low maintenance requirements and prolonged blooming season, making it an ideal houseplant. It is commonly grown in small pots due to its compact size. Rainbow Pincushion thrives with minimal care, needing only plentiful light to encourage spine development and occasional watering, as it is adapted to desert conditions. It exhibits surprising frost tolerance, enduring temperatures down to −4 °C (25 °F), but cannot survive lower temperatures. In cultivation, it performs best in part shade to full sun, with very low water needs, and prefers well-draining soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
