Summary

Mariosousa heterophylla, commonly known as the palo blanco tree, palo liso, guinola, or Willard’s acacia, is an evergreen tree native to the dry tropical forests and thorn scrub of Mexico. This species is often found in arid environments, where it contributes to the unique ecology of these regions. It typically grows to a height of 10–20 feet with a canopy spread of one-third to two-thirds of its height, presenting a very slender form with few branches and sparse foliage. The bark is a distinctive feature, peeling away to reveal a smooth, white surface reminiscent of white sticks, hence the Spanish common name ’palo blanco’. The flowers, appearing in rod or bottle-brush-like spikes, are white or light yellow and are considered modestly showy. Flowering occurs in pale yellow spikes, and the tree produces multichambered pods that are 3–4 inches long.

The palo blanco tree is valued for its drought tolerance and striking white bark, making it a unique ornamental choice for xeriscaping and low-water-use gardens. It is used in cultivation for urban planting, as a feature tree in residential landscapes, and for naturalistic plantings in arid regions. It thrives in full sun and requires very low to low amounts of water, preferring soils with fast drainage. While it is generally low-maintenance, care should be taken to avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.CC BY-SA 4.0
