Estimated Native Range
Summary
Marsdenia volubilis, commonly known as Green Milkweed Climber, is a deciduous vine native to tropical and subtropical forests, as well as scrubland jungles in East Asia and South Asia. It can climb to heights of 10-15 feet (3-4.5 meters) when supported, with a spread of about 2 feet (0.6 meters). The plant features twining stems and produces clusters of small, fragrant, yellowish-green flowers during the summer months. The flowers are not particularly showy, but they are attractive to pollinators. It is not commonly known for its fruit, but it does produce follicles containing seeds with silky tufts.
Green Milkweed Climber is valued for its ability to cover trellises and arbors quickly, providing a lush green appearance throughout the growing season. It is used in tropical and subtropical gardens for vertical interest and can be grown as a houseplant in cooler climates. This vine prefers a warm, humid environment and requires a sturdy structure to support its climbing habit. It thrives in full sun to partial shade, with medium water needs and well-drained soil. While not particularly prone to diseases, it can be affected by common pests such as aphids and spider mites. It is also important to note that all parts of the plant contain toxic compounds and should not be ingested.CC BY-SA 4.0
