Summary

Matthiola incana, commonly known as Brompton stock, is a biennial or short-lived perennial herb in the Brassicaceae family. It is native to southern Europe, where i thrives in coastal areas, often on limestone cliffs and old walls, and is naturalized in the western Mediterranean, coexisting with the olive tree. This species is adapted to calcareous soils and can be found up to 600 meters (2,000 feet) in altitude. Matthiola incana typically grows to a height of 30-75 cm (12-30 inches) and is known for its grey-green foliage and dense clusters of flowers that can be white, pink, lilac, or purple, blooming from late spring to summer. The flowers are highly fragrant, especially in the evening, making them a favorite in gardens and for cut flower arrangements.

Brompton stock is valued for its richly scented, showy flowers and is often used in borders, cottage gardens, and as a cut flower. It is relatively easy to maintain and can provide a continuous display of blooms if deadheaded regularly. In cultivation, it requires full sun exposure and well-drained soil, preferably alkaline. While it tolerates drought, it benefits from regular watering during prolonged dry spells. It is susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils and can be affected by pests such as flea beetles and caterpillars.CC BY-SA 4.0
