Summary

Mazus miquelii, commonly known as Miquel’s mazus or creeping mazus, is a herbaceous perennial groundcover native to moist meadows and stream banks in East Asia, including China, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea. It is a low-growing plant that spreads rapidly through slender stolons rooting at the nodes, forming a dense mat. The leaves are simple, ovate to oblong, and serrated along the margins. From June to August, it produces attractive blue or purple flowers with bilateral symmetry and five petals, which are highly attractive to pollinators. The flowers are modest in size but can create a showy display when the plant is in full bloom. This species is hermaphroditic, with both male and female organs, and is primarily pollinated by insects.

Miquel’s mazus is valued for its ability to cover ground quickly, making it an excellent choice for filling in wet areas in gardens, around ponds, or as a living mulch in moist, shaded beds. It is also used to stabilize soil in riparian zones. In cultivation, it requires consistently moist to wet soils and can even tolerate occasional flooding. It prefers full sun to part shade and is not drought-tolerant, requiring regular watering during dry spells. While it is generally easy to maintain, it can become invasive in ideal conditions, spreading beyond its intended area. Gardeners should be mindful of its growth habit and may need to contain its spread through physical barriers or regular edging.CC BY-SA 4.0
