Summary
Melaleuca deanei, commonly known as Deane’s Paperbark, is a shrub endemic to the coastal and tableland districts of New South Wales, Australia, particularly within the Sydney Basin. It thrives in wet sclerophyll forests and along the margins of swamps and rivers. This species is characterized by its grey, fibrous, flaky bark and narrow oval leaves. It typically grows to a height of 3 m (10 ft) and exhibits new growth that is furry and white, maturing to a glabrous texture. The white flowers are showy, arranged in spikes at the ends of branches that continue to grow after flowering, with a blooming period from July to November.
Deane’s Paperbark is valued for its ornamental spikes of white flowers and its distinctive bark, which adds textural interest to gardens. It is suitable for use in native plant gardens, as a feature shrub, and for habitat restoration projects. The plant is drought-tolerant once established, requiring full sun and soils with slow drainage. While it is classified as vulnerable in the wild, it can be cultivated successfully under the right conditions. Care should be taken to provide sufficient space for its mature size.CC BY-SA 4.0
