Summary

Melaleuca leucadendra, commonly known as Weeping Paperbark, is an evergreen tree native to the monsoon forests, coastal swamps, and stream banks of northern and eastern Australia, as well as Papua New Guinea and the Aru Islands. It can grow to more than 20 meters (70 feet) with a trunk covered in thick, white, papery bark and weeping branches that give it a distinctive, graceful appearance. The long flowering season of Weeping Paperbark can occur at almost any time of the year, with flowers that are cream, white, or greenish-white and arranged in spikes at the ends of branches, which continue to grow after flowering. The spikes are showy and attract a variety of pollinators. The fruit that follows are woody capsules, 3.9–4.9 mm (0.15–0.19 in) long, in loose clusters along the stems.

This species is valued for its ornamental bark and long flowering season, making it a popular choice for parks and roadside plantings. It thrives in full sun to part shade, prefers moist, well-drained soils, and can tolerate temporary flooding, reflecting its riparian origins. While it is drought-tolerant once established, regular watering is beneficial during prolonged dry periods. Weeping Paperbark is also known for its essential oils, which have medicinal uses, and its bark, which has been used traditionally for crafting and insulation. However, it is potentially invasive in some regions outside its native range, so it is important to consult local guidelines before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
