Estimated Native Range
Summary
Melaleuca microphylla, commonly known as D’Alton’s Melaleuca, is an evergreen shrub native to the Mediterranean-type shrublands and coastal regions of Southwestern Australia. It typically grows to about 4–5 meters (13–16 feet) high and is characterized by glabrous foliage and distinctive grey or white papery bark. The small, white to creamy yellow flowers are arranged in compact heads at the branch tips, blooming mainly in spring. The flowers are somewhat showy and are followed by woody, cup-shaped capsules that contain seeds. D’Alton’s Melaleuca is valued for its hardiness and is often used as a hedge or screen due to its dense growth habit.
This species thrives in a variety of soil types, preferring full sun exposure and tolerating both low and medium water conditions. Its adaptability to different soils and situations makes it a versatile choice for gardeners. While it is drought-tolerant once established, it benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods. D’Alton’s Melaleuca is relatively low-maintenance, making it suitable for urban planting, border planting, and as a windbreak in coastal areas. It is also resistant to many common plant diseases, although it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
