Estimated Native Range
Summary
Mentzelia lindleyi, commonly known as Lindley’s Blazingstar, is an annual herb native to the open, dry habitats of California, including chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and desert edges. It typically grows to 1–3 feet (0.30–0.91 m) tall and is known for its striking bright yellow flowers, which are 3 inches in diameter and have five petals. Each plant can produce an impressive display of 25-35 flowers during its flowering season, which adds to its ornamental value. The flowers are particularly showy, blooming from late spring to early fall, and attract a variety of pollinators.
Lindley’s Blazingstar is valued for its vibrant flowers and ability to thrive in challenging conditions, making it a suitable choice for traditional flower beds, drought-tolerant landscapes, habitat gardens, and desert rock gardens. It is also a beneficial pollinator plant in wildlife gardens. This plant prefers sandy, well-draining soil and requires full sun exposure to flourish. While it tolerates medium amounts of water, it is well adapted to low-water conditions, making it an excellent plant for xeriscaping. Gardeners should be aware that it can self-seed prolifically under the right conditions, which may require management in some settings.CC BY-SA 4.0
