Summary

Mentzelia multiflora, commonly known as Adonis Blazingstar, is a deciduous biennial or perennial herb native to the arid and semi-arid regions of the Central United States, including grasslands, deserts, and scrublands. It typically grows to a height of 2–2.5 feet (0.61–0.76 m) and is characterized by shiny white stems and numerous branches. The plant’s leaves are bright green, sticky, and covered with hairs that have minute barbs, which can adhere to clothing and fur. Adonis Blazingstar produces showy yellow flowers about 5 cm (2.0 in) in diameter, usually with ten petals, that open in the late afternoon and close in the morning. The hermaphroditic flowers bloom from July to August, attracting pollinators during these hours.

Adonis Blazingstar is valued for its bright, nocturnal flowers that add a unique appeal to wildflower and specialty gardens. It is often used in xeriscaping due to its low water requirements and preference for dry, sandy, well-drained soils. The plant thrives in full sun and is not suited to shaded areas. While it is relatively easy to maintain, it can self-seed prolifically under ideal conditions, potentially becoming weedy. Gardeners should be aware of its barbed hairs when handling the plant.CC BY-SA 4.0
