Summary

Metrosideros fulgens, commonly known as Scarlet Rata or Akatawhiwhi, is an evergreen perennial vine native to the coastal and lowland forests of New Zealand. It is particularly associated with kauri forests. This species is one of the more conspicuous rātā vines due to its vibrant displays of large red flowers, which are particularly showy and can also be orange or yellow. These flowers are a significant source of nectar during autumn and winter when other food sources are scarce for native birds. Scarlet Rata can grow up to 10 meters long, with the main stem reaching over 10 cm in diameter. Its climbing habit is similar to that of ivy, using short adventitious roots to cling to host trees. As the vine matures, its thick, twisted, rope-like stems often hang free, featuring red-brown flaky bark. The leaves are dark green, leathery, and mostly rounded at the tip.

Scarlet Rata is valued for its striking floral display and ability to attract wildlife, making it a popular choice for ecological plantings and ornamental gardens. It requires a support structure to climb on, such as a trellis or another plant. While it thrives in full sun or part shade, it prefers high moisture levels and well-draining soils. It is not drought-tolerant and may require additional watering during dry periods. Gardeners should be aware that while it is not typically invasive, it can become quite large and may need regular pruning to manage its size.CC BY-SA 4.0
