Estimated Native Range
Summary
Micranthes punctata, commonly known as Spotted Saxifrage or Dotted Saxifrage, is a perennial herb that is native to alpine and subalpine zones across Asia, as well as Arctic regions. It thrives in its natural habitat of moist meadows, rocky slopes, and gravelly areas near streams and rivers. This plant typically grows slowly to a height and width of 0.5-1.5 feet (0.15-0.5 meters), forming a low, mounded clump. The Spotted Saxifrage is characterized by its basal rosettes of spoon-shaped leaves and tall, slender flowering stems. It produces clusters of white flowers, each dotted with yellow and red, which bloom in the summer and are quite showy against the foliage.
The Spotted Saxifrage is valued for its delicate, star-shaped flowers and its ability to thrive in rock gardens and alpine troughs. It is often used in cultivation for border fronts, rockeries, and as a ground cover in suitable climates. This plant prefers full sun to part shade and requires well-drained soils, such as clay, loam, or sandy soils. It is relatively low maintenance, needing only medium amounts of water once established. While it is not prone to many diseases, it can suffer from root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly draining soils. It is also important to note that it may not tolerate the heat and humidity of the southeastern United States.CC BY-SA 4.0
