Summary
Microseris nutans, commonly known as Nodding Microseris or Nodding Silverpuffs, is a perennial herb that is indigenous to a variety of habitats in western North America, ranging from grasslands and meadows to open woodlands and forest clearings. This species is particularly adapted to well-drained soils in sunny locations. It can reach up to 28 inches in height and features branching stems with lance-shaped, toothed leaves that form a basal rosette. The plant is notable for its nodding flower heads, which bloom from April to July, displaying bright yellow ray florets that are moderately showy. The fruit is an achene topped with a large, silvery-white pappus that aids in wind dispersal.
Nodding Microseris is valued for its unique flower heads and is often used in wildflower gardens, native plant landscapes, and restoration projects. It is drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for xeriscaping. While it prefers full sun, it can tolerate light shade. It is relatively low-maintenance, requiring minimal supplemental watering in suitable climates. There are no major disease issues, but it can be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils. Gardeners should be aware that it may self-seed and spread if conditions are favorable.CC BY-SA 4.0
