Estimated Native Range
Summary
Mikania scandens, commonly known as Climbing Hempvine, is a deciduous perennial vine native to wetland margins, stream banks, and floodplain forests in the Southern and Eastern USA, extending to the Gulf Coast and Northeastern Mexico. It typically climbs over other vegetation or sprawls along the ground in its natural habitat. Climbing Hempvine can reach lengths of up to 20 feet (6 meters) under ideal conditions. The leaves are heart-shaped, and the plant produces small, tubular flowers that are pinkish, purplish, or white, clustered in panicles. These flowers bloom from late summer to fall and are attractive to a variety of pollinators.
Climbing Hempvine is valued for its rapid growth and ability to cover unsightly areas, making it useful for naturalistic plantings and habitat restoration projects. It can be used to stabilize soil in riparian zones. While it prefers moist, fertile soils, it is adaptable to a range of conditions, including full sun to part shade and medium to wet soils with medium to slow drainage. Gardeners should be cautious, as it can become aggressive and may require management to prevent it from overrunning other plants.CC BY-SA 4.0
