Estimated Native Range
Summary
Miscanthus floridulus, commonly known as Pacific Island silvergrass, is a robust perennial grass native to open woodlands and grasslands of eastern and southeastern Asia, as well as the Pacific islands. It is characterized by its tall stature, often reaching up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) in height, with a similar spread. The plant forms dense clumps of arching leaves and produces feathery, silver to pale pink plumes that rise above the foliage in late summer to fall. The flowers are highly ornamental and can add a dramatic effect to the landscape.
Pacific Island silvergrass is valued for its vertical accent and textural contrast in garden designs. It is often used in mass plantings, as a screen, or as a specimen plant in large-scale landscapes. It thrives in full sun but can tolerate part shade, and prefers moist, well-drained soils. While it is relatively low-maintenance, it may require division every few years to maintain vigor. In regions where it is not invasive, it can be a striking addition to the garden. However, gardeners should be cautious as Miscanthus floridulus can become invasive outside its native range, spreading through both rhizomes and self-seeding, and potentially disrupting local ecosystems.CC BY-SA 4.0
