Estimated Native Range
Summary
Miscanthus nepalensis, commonly known as Nepalese Silvergrass, is a deciduous perennial grass native to the Himalayas and foothills in Nepal, as well as grasslands and open woodlands in Southeast Asia. It typically grows to a height and width of 3-5 feet (0.9-1.5 meters), forming dense clumps of arching foliage. The plant features feathery flower plumes that are golden or silver in color, appearing in mid to late summer and often persisting into winter, adding visual interest to the garden. The flowers are highly ornamental and can be used in dried arrangements.
Nepalese Silvergrass is valued for its graceful form and attractive seed heads, which sway in the breeze and catch the light. It is used in garden design for mass plantings, as a specimen plant, or as part of a mixed border. This grass prefers full sun but can tolerate light shade and requires well-drained soil. It is relatively low maintenance, but it may need division every few years to maintain vigor. While not typically invasive, it can self-seed if conditions are favorable.CC BY-SA 4.0
