Summary
Mitella diphylla, commonly known as Twoleaf Miterwort or Bishop’s Cap, is a deciduous perennial herb native to the cool, moist woodlands and forest floors of the Eastern United States and Southeast Canada. It forms clumps and spreads via a rhizomatous root system with fibrous roots. The plant typically grows from 20 to 50 cm (8 to 20 in) tall and is notable for its heart-shaped, opposite leaves and delicate, lacy white flowers that appear in mid-spring. The flowers are borne in racemes and are quite showy, despite their small size, due to their unique petal structure. After flowering, the plant produces tiny, shiny black seeds, 1.2–1.6 mm (0.05–0.06 in), which are ejected from their green cup-like sepals by the impact of raindrops.
Twoleaf Miterwort is valued for its understated beauty and ability to thrive in shady garden spots where other plants might struggle. It is often used in native plant gardens, woodland gardens, and as a ground cover in shaded areas. The plant is relatively low-maintenance, requiring medium amounts of water and preferring wet-mesic to dry soil conditions. It is adaptable to a range of soil drainage types but thrives best in part shade. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, slugs and snails can sometimes be a problem in overly moist conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
