Summary

Mitraria coccinea, commonly known as Chilean Mitre Flower, is an evergreen perennial vine native to the temperate rainforests of southern Chile and adjacent areas of Argentina. It thrives in the understory of these forests, where it climbs trees and scrambles over the ground. Typically, it can reach lengths of up to 25 feet (7.6 meters) when supported. The Chilean Mitre Flower has a woody stem and displays very attractive scarlet-orange tubular flowers that bloom in late spring and summer, adding a splash of color to the garden. The flowers are particularly showy and can be a focal point when in bloom.

The plant is valued for its ornamental flowers and versatility in the garden. It can be used as ground cover or allowed to climb trees and trellises in cool, moist climates similar to its native habitat. It is also suitable for container planting, where it can be trained to grow on supports. In cultivation, it prefers full sun to part shade and requires consistently moist soil with good drainage to thrive. While it is not particularly drought-tolerant, it can withstand brief periods of dryness once established. Gardeners should be aware that in some conditions, it may require protection from strong winds and heavy frost.CC BY-SA 4.0
