Summary
Monardella linoides, commonly known as Flaxleaf Monardella, is an evergreen perennial subshrub or herb native to chaparral and scrub habitats, particularly in the Southwestern United States, California, and Northern Mexico. This plant typically grows to a maximum height of 50 centimeters with a slender erect stem. The leaves are linear to oval, 1 to 4 centimeters long, and covered in grayish hairs, which help reduce water loss in its arid native environment. The inflorescence consists of a head of several light purple flowers, each just over a centimeter long, surrounded by a cup of pale whitish or pink-tinged papery bracts 2 or 3 centimeters wide. The flowering season is primarily in the spring and summer, and the blooms are modestly showy, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
Flaxleaf Monardella is appreciated for its drought tolerance and aromatic foliage, which can be used in xeriscaping and as a fragrant addition to gardens. It is often used in rock gardens, native plant gardens, and as a border plant. This plant thrives in part shade to full sun, with medium amounts of water, and prefers well-drained soils. While it is relatively low maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils. It is not known for aggressive roots or significant disease issues. When grown outside its native range, it is not typically invasive.CC BY-SA 4.0
