Monardella odoratissima subsp. villosa, commonly known as Coyote Mint, Coyote Mint Pennyroyal, Mountain Pennyroyal, or Mountain Monardella, is a perennial herb native to California’s chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and woodlands, often found in dry, open spaces including forest clearings and particularly on serpentine soils. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height and width of 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). This plant forms a mound of aromatic foliage, with narrow, lance-shaped leaves. During the summer, it produces clusters of tubular pink or purple flowers that are highly attractive to pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Coyote Mint is valued for its fragrant foliage and showy flowers, which make it an excellent choice for native plant gardens, pollinator gardens, and as a border plant. It is drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for xeriscaping and low-water-use landscapes. It is also used in culinary applications, as the leaves have a minty flavor. Coyote Mint thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained soils, including clay, loam, or sandy types.
