Summary
Monardella villosa, commonly known as coyote mint, is a perennial subshrub in the mint family, native to the coastal chaparral and woodlands of California, particularly in the Central Coast and Northern regions. It typically grows to a height and width of 1-2 feet, forming a small bush or matted groundcover with hairy, mint-scented foliage. Coyote mint produces rounded inflorescences of small, bright lavender or pink flowers that are thready and bloom from May to August, attracting a variety of pollinators including bees and butterflies.
Coyote mint is valued for its aromatic foliage and showy flowers, which make it an excellent choice for native plant gardens, drought-tolerant landscapes, and habitat gardens. It is also used in ecological restoration projects. This species is adapted to full sun exposure and requires low amounts of water once established, thriving in well-drained soils.
