Summary

Monardella villosa, commonly known as coyote mint, is a perennial subshrub in the mint family, native to the coastal chaparral and woodlands of California, particularly in the Central Coast and Northern regions. It typically grows to a height and width of 1-2 feet, forming a small bush or matted groundcover with hairy, mint-scented foliage. Coyote mint produces rounded inflorescences of small, bright lavender or pink flowers that are thready and bloom from May to August, attracting a variety of pollinators including bees and butterflies.

Coyote mint is valued for its aromatic foliage and showy flowers, which make it an excellent choice for native plant gardens, drought-tolerant landscapes, and habitat gardens. It is also used in ecological restoration projects. This species is adapted to full sun exposure and requires low amounts of water once established, thriving in well-drained soils. It is relatively easy to maintain and can serve as a ground cover or border plant. While it is not commonly afflicted by diseases, it can be sensitive to overwatering, which may lead to root rot. Coyote mint is also available from specialty nurseries that focus on native and ornamental plants.CC BY-SA 4.0
