Summary
Moquilea tomentosa, synonym Licania tomentosa, commonly known as Oiti, is a flowering plant species native to a variety of habitats in Brazil, including the Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, and Caatinga biomes. It is a deciduous or semi-deciduous tree that can reach up to 49 feet (15 meters) in height and 30 feet (9 meters) in width, with a dense, rounded canopy. The Oiti is known for its broad, velvety leaves and small, inconspicuous yellowish flowers that bloom in the summer. The fruit is a yellow drupe that is edible and highly appreciated for its sweet taste.
Oiti is valued for its shade and is often used as a street tree in urban areas of Brazil and Colombia. It is also planted in gardens and parks for its ornamental foliage and fruit production. The tree is relatively easy to maintain, requiring moderate water and thriving in well-drained soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade. In cultivation, it is not known to have serious disease or pest problems, but it should be monitored for leaf spot and root rot in poor drainage conditions. The fruit is not only consumed fresh but also used in the production of jams and beverages.CC BY-SA 4.0
