Estimated Native Range
Summary
Moraea spathulata, commonly known as Large Yellow Moraea, is an evergreen perennial bulb native to the seasonally moist fynbos and renosterveld habitats, as well as grasslands and sometimes in slightly brackish conditions in Southern Africa. It typically grows to a height of 1-4 feet (0.3-1.2 meters) with a narrow spread of about 0.2 feet (0.06 meters). The plant features sword-shaped leaves and produces large, showy yellow flowers with brown or purple markings at the base of each petal, which bloom in the winter and spring. The flowers are particularly striking due to their size and vibrant color.
Large Yellow Moraea is valued for its bright, cheerful flowers that can add a splash of color to winter and spring gardens. It is suitable for use in mixed borders, rock gardens, and as a focal point in Mediterranean or drought-tolerant landscapes. While it prefers full sun to part shade, it requires well-drained soil and moderate water, especially during its growing season. After flowering, the plant can tolerate drier conditions. It is not commonly affected by diseases but can be susceptible to rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
