Summary

Morella rubra, commonly known as Chinese bayberry, yangmei, or yumberry, is an evergreen tree native to subtropical forest margins, hillsides, and river basins in eastern Asia, including China, Japan, Korea, and the Philippines. It can grow up to 66 feet (20 meters) tall and is characterized by its dense, rounded crown, leathery green leaves, and rough bark. The tree is particularly noted for its spherical, crimson-red fruit that ripens in early summer. The fruits are sweet-tart with a unique flavor and are consumed fresh, dried, or used in beverages and traditional medicines. Flowering occurs in spring, with inconspicuous flowers that are not particularly showy.

Chinese bayberry is valued for its delicious fruit and has been cultivated for over 2000 years, particularly in China where it holds significant economic importance. It is also planted as an ornamental tree due to its attractive foliage and fruit. In cultivation, Morella rubra prefers full sun to part shade and thrives in poor, acidic soils with good drainage. It is relatively low maintenance but requires regular watering during dry periods. While generally pest-resistant, it can be susceptible to fruit flies and fungal diseases that affect the fruit. The tree is not known for aggressive roots or significant invasiveness outside its native range.CC BY-SA 4.0
