Estimated Native Range
Summary
Muhlenbergia racemosa, commonly known as Marsh Muhly, is a rhizomatous perennial grass native to North America, particularly found in wet meadows, marshes, and along stream banks in the north-central United States. It typically grows up to 4 feet tall with flat, linear leaves that can reach up to 7 inches in length. From late summer to fall, it produces narrow, open panicles that are up to 6 inches long, with a delicate and airy appearance. The flowers are not particularly showy but do add a fine-textured element to the landscape.
Marsh Muhly is valued for its adaptability to wet conditions and is often used in rain gardens, wetland restoration projects, and as a stabilizing plant along waterways due to its rhizomatous growth habit. It thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers moist to wet soils, but can tolerate a range of soil types. This grass is not commonly used in ornamental horticulture but can be an effective ground cover in appropriate conditions. While it is not typically problematic, in some conditions it can spread aggressively, so care should be taken when planting in smaller landscapes or gardens.CC BY-SA 4.0
