Estimated Native Range
Summary
Muhlenbergia rigens, commonly known as Deergrass, is a perennial evergreen grass native to open woodlands, chaparral, and riparian areas in the Southwestern and Western United States and Mexico. It typically grows to about 3 feet (0.91 m) in height and width, forming dense, tufted clumps of narrow, pointed leaves that range in color from light silver-green to purple. The spikelike flowering stems can reach 3–4 feet (0.91–1.22 m) in length, with flowered panicles often extending up to 5 feet tall, adding visual interest to the landscape. Deergrass blooms in late summer to fall, with flowers that are not particularly showy but have a subtle beauty and attract native pollinators.
Deergrass is valued for its low water requirements, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and sustainable landscapes. It is often used for erosion control, as a ground cover, and in naturalized areas. Deergrass is also used in restoration projects due to its adaptability and ease of establishment. It thrives in full sun, tolerates a range of soil types, and requires minimal maintenance once established. Occasional burning or mowing can rejuvenate the plant by removing accumulated dead material. While it is generally disease-free, overwatering can lead to root rot. Deergrass is not known for aggressive roots or invasiveness, making it a safe choice for gardeners.CC BY-SA 4.0
