Estimated Native Range
Summary
Myrceugenia obtusa, commonly known as Rarán, is an evergreen tree native to the sclerophyllous forests and Mediterranean-type shrublands of Central Chile. It is a small tree that typically grows up to 8 meters (26 feet) tall and is characterized by its greyish bark. The new shoots are reddish and hairy, adding to the plant’s ornamental value. The leaves are opposite, leathery, with an entire margin, and are elliptical to ovate in shape with acute, obtuse, or roundish apexes. Myrceugenia obtusa produces hermaphroditic flowers that are solitary and axillary, with 4 sepals fused at the base and 4 free petals. The numerous stamens, varying from 90 to 190 and measuring 4–8 mm long, surround a style that is about 5–7 mm long. The flowering season is not specified, but the flowers are typically not showy.
In cultivation, Rarán is appreciated for its attractive foliage and bark, as well as its adaptability to different garden settings. It is suitable for urban planting, border planting, and as a specimen tree in residential gardens. It thrives in full sun to part shade, requires medium amounts of water, and prefers soils with medium drainage. While not commonly found in cultivation outside its native range, it can be a unique addition to a diverse garden. Gardeners should be aware that specific information on popular cultivars and potential problems is limited due to its rarity in cultivation.CC BY-SA 4.0
