Summary

Myrrhis odorata, commonly known as Sweet Cicely, is a deciduous perennial herb native to mountain grasslands and woodland edges in Europe. It can reach up to 2 meters in height under optimal conditions. The plant features fern-like, 2-4-pinnate leaves that are finely divided and feathery, growing up to 50 cm long, with distinctive whitish patches near the rachis. Sweet Cicely is softly hairy and emits a strong aniseed fragrance when the foliage is crushed. Its creamy-white flowers, approximately 2–4 mm across, are produced in large, showy umbels from May to June. The slender, dark brown fruits measure 15–25 mm in length and 3–4 mm in width.

Sweet Cicely is valued for its aromatic leaves and attractive, delicate flowers, making it a pleasant addition to herb gardens and shaded borders. It is also used in culinary applications for its aniseed flavor. This plant is relatively easy to grow, thriving in part shade to full shade and preferring medium moisture levels. It adapts to a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage. Sweet Cicely can be propagated by seed or division in spring or autumn. However, gardeners should be aware that it can become invasive due to its vigorous growth and self-seeding habit.CC BY-SA 4.0
