Estimated Native Range
Summary
Nectandra megapotamica, commonly known as Canella, Canela-sassafrás, Canela-guataca, or Sassafrás, is an evergreen tree native to the Atlantic Forest and subtropical regions of South America, including Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, and Uruguay. It thrives in moist, well-drained soils of riverine forests and lower montane regions. This species exhibits a moderate growth rate and can reach heights of 60-80 feet (18-24 meters) with a notable canopy that provides dense shade. The tree is characterized by its glossy, dark green leaves and clusters of small, fragrant white flowers that bloom in the spring, which are followed by purple-black berries that attract wildlife.
Nectandra megapotamica is valued for its aromatic leaves and bark, which are used in traditional medicine and as a spice. Its ornamental qualities include the showy spring flowers and the dense, evergreen foliage that makes it suitable for use as a privacy screen or shade tree in large gardens and parks. It requires medium amounts of water and can adapt to a range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils, with medium to slow drainage. While it prefers full sun to part shade, it is somewhat tolerant of heavier shade. Gardeners should be aware that this tree may require space to accommodate its size and potential root growth.CC BY-SA 4.0
