Summary
Neogaerrhinum strictum, commonly known as Kellogg’s Snapdragon, is an annual herb native to chaparral and oak woodlands in California. It is characterized by its thin, sprawling habit, sometimes becoming vine-like as it climbs nearby objects or other plants. This species typically grows to a height of 10-50 centimeters. The inflorescence is notable for its solitary flower on a very long, strongly coiling pedicel that can reach up to 9 centimeters in length. The flower itself is a dark-veined purple snapdragon, over a centimeter wide, and blooms from April to July. The fruit is a dehiscent capsule filled with many bumpy seeds.
Kellogg’s Snapdragon is appreciated for its unique coiling pedicels and vibrant purple flowers, adding interest to wildflower gardens, borders, and naturalized areas. It is relatively easy to maintain, requiring low to medium amounts of water and thriving in well-drained soils. It prefers part shade to full sun, making it versatile for various garden settings. While it is not commonly known for any significant problems, it may be susceptible to common snapdragon pests and diseases.CC BY-SA 4.0
