Summary
Nolina parryi, commonly known as Parry’s Beargrass, is an evergreen perennial subshrub native to the chaparral and desert scrub of Southern California and Northwestern Mexico. It is not a true grass but belongs to the Agavaceae family. Parry’s Beargrass can reach over two meters in height, with a thick, woody trunk up to 60 centimeters in diameter. The plant forms dense rosettes of up to 220 stiff, linear leaves that can be up to 140 centimeters long and 4 centimeters wide. It is dioecious, meaning individual plants are either male or female. The white flowers are borne on a tall, plume-like inflorescence that typically emerges in late spring and can be quite showy.
Parry’s Beargrass is valued for its architectural form and drought tolerance, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and native plant gardens. It is often used as a focal point in landscapes due to its unique appearance. While it thrives in full sun or part shade, it requires well-draining soil and only occasional watering once established, reflecting its adaptation to arid environments. It is generally free of serious pests and diseases but can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered.CC BY-SA 4.0
