Summary
Nothochelone nemorosa, commonly known as Woodland Beardtongue, is a deciduous perennial herb that thrives in the moist, open woodlands and forest edges of the Pacific Northwest, including the Northwestern United States and British Columbia. It can reach up to 1 meter in height and features an erect, hairy stem emerging from a caudex. The leaves are lance-shaped and may have serrated edges. The inflorescence is a panicle of tubular flowers, resembling those of penstemons, with two lobed lips and a distinctive hairy staminode. The flowers, which bloom from late spring to early summer, are light to dark pink and can exceed 3 centimeters in length, adding a splash of color to the garden. The fruit is a capsule that releases small winged seeds.
Woodland Beardtongue is valued for its showy flowers and ability to attract pollinators such as bees and hummingbirds. It is often used in naturalistic plantings, woodland gardens, and borders. This plant prefers consistently moist conditions and can tolerate a range of light from full sun to part shade, making it versatile for various garden settings. It requires soils with good drainage and medium fertility. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to root rot if overwatered or planted in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
