Summary
Nuphar variegata, commonly known as Variegated Pond-Lily, is a deciduous perennial herb native to calm freshwater habitats such as ponds, slow-moving streams, and marshes in Canada and the Northern United States. It typically has a spread of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters). The leaves of Variegated Pond-Lily are rounded, heart-shaped at the base, and float on the water’s surface, which is a distinctive feature compared to other species of Nuphar in Canada, where leaves may emerge above water. Its bright yellow flowers bloom in the summer and are quite showy, attracting pollinators such as bees and beetles.
The Variegated Pond-Lily is valued for its ornamental flowers and foliage, which add visual interest to water gardens and naturalized pond settings. It is also used for wildlife habitat restoration as it provides cover and foraging opportunities for aquatic animals. This plant thrives in full sun to part shade and requires an aquatic environment with still or slow-moving water. It prefers rich, loamy soils but can tolerate a range of soil types as long as they are saturated or submerged. While generally low-maintenance, it can spread vigorously in ideal conditions and may need to be managed to prevent overgrowth.CC BY-SA 4.0
