Estimated Native Range
Summary
Nymphoides indica, commonly known as Water Snowflake, is an aquatic perennial herb native to still and slow-moving freshwater habitats such as ponds, lakes, and ditches in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. It has a moderate growth rate and spreads by rhizomes, forming dense clusters of floating heart-shaped leaves that are reminiscent of water lily pads. The plant typically produces small, star-shaped white flowers with fringed petals throughout the warmer months, which are quite showy and float on the water’s surface. The flowers are followed by green, berry-like fruit.
Water Snowflake is valued for its ornamental flowers and ability to provide shade and shelter for aquatic wildlife. It is commonly used in water gardens, ponds, and aquariums. In cultivation, it requires full sun to part shade, and thrives in still or slow-moving water with rich, loamy, and well-aerated substrates. While it can be a beautiful addition to water features, Nymphoides indica should be monitored for aggressive growth, as it can quickly cover large areas and outcompete native species. It is potentially invasive outside its native range, and gardeners should consult local regulations before introducing it to non-native environments.CC BY-SA 4.0
