Estimated Native Range
Summary
Oclemena acuminata, commonly known as Whorled Wood Aster, is a perennial herb that is native to rich, mesic deciduous forests, forest clearings, and woodland edges in eastern North America, ranging from Newfoundland to Georgia. This species typically grows to a height of 1-3 feet (0.3-0.9 meters) and spreads 1-2 feet (0.3-0.6 meters). Whorled Wood Aster is characterized by its lance-shaped, acuminate leaves that are arranged in a whorled pattern along the stem, and it produces clusters of small, white to pale lavender flowers with yellow centers from late summer to early fall. The flowers are moderately showy and attract a variety of pollinators.
Whorled Wood Aster is appreciated for its ability to thrive in shaded conditions and its contribution to biodiversity, supporting pollinators and other wildlife. It is often used in woodland gardens, shade gardens, and naturalized areas. This plant prefers moist, well-drained soils and partial to full shade, making it suitable for cultivation under the canopy of larger trees. While generally low-maintenance, it can be susceptible to powdery mildew in overly humid conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
