Summary
Oenothera berlandieri, commonly known as Berlandier’s Sundrops, is a deciduous perennial herb native to a variety of habitats including grasslands, prairies, and open woodlands in the South Central United States and Mexico, specifically SE. Colorado, S. Kansas, W. Oklahoma, Texas, E. New Mexico, and Alabama. It typically grows to a height of 0.3-0.7 feet (0.09-0.2 meters) and a width of 0.5-0.7 feet (0.15-0.2 meters). Berlandier’s Sundrops features lance-shaped leaves and produces showy, cup-shaped yellow flowers that bloom profusely in the summer and fall, adding a splash of color to the garden. The plant is drought-tolerant and attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
This species is valued for its low maintenance requirements and its ability to thrive in poor, well-drained soils. It is often used in rock gardens, borders, and native plant gardens. Berlandier’s Sundrops is also suitable for xeriscaping due to its drought tolerance. Full sun is ideal for promoting vigorous growth and abundant flowering. While the species typically has yellow flowers, the ’Siskiyou’ cultivar is notable for its pale pink blooms. Gardeners should be aware that Oenothera species can spread readily by self-seeding and may become aggressive in some conditions.CC BY-SA 4.0
