Summary

Olearia axillaris, commonly known as Coastal Daisy-bush, is an evergreen shrub native to coastal dunes and sandy soils of southern Australia, including Tasmania. It typically grows up to 10 feet tall and can spread to a similar width. The plant has a bushy habit with erect stems and aromatic, linear to narrowly elliptic leaves that are densely covered with white, cottony hairs, giving them a silvery appearance. The small, showy daisy-like flowers, which are white with yellow centers, bloom from late spring to early autumn (December to May in the Southern Hemisphere), attracting a variety of pollinators.

Coastal Daisy-bush is valued for its hardiness in coastal conditions, its ability to stabilize sand dunes, and its attractive foliage and flowers. It is often used in coastal gardens, as a windbreak, or for habitat restoration projects. This shrub thrives in full sun to part shade and prefers well-drained sandy soils, tolerating drought and salt spray once established. While generally low-maintenance, it can benefit from occasional pruning to maintain its shape and promote denser growth. There are no major disease or pest problems associated with Olearia axillaris, but it may be susceptible to root rot in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
