Estimated Native Range
Summary
Omphalodes cappadocica, commonly known as Cappadocian Navelwort, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the moist, shady woodlands and forest floors of the Caucasus and Turkey. It reaches a modest size of 25 cm (10 in) in height and 40 cm (16 in) in width. The plant features slightly hairy, oval to lance-shaped leaves and bears loose terminal racemes of bright blue flowers with white centers, reminiscent of forget-me-nots, which bloom in the spring. The flowers are particularly showy and add a splash of color to shaded garden areas.
Cappadocian Navelwort is appreciated for its ground-covering ability in moist, shaded environments, making it an excellent choice for woodland gardens, shaded borders, or underplanting beneath taller shrubs. It has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, indicating its value in ornamental horticulture. The plant thrives in part shade to full shade and prefers consistently moist soil with good drainage. While it is generally easy to maintain, it can suffer from slug and snail damage, which gardeners should monitor for. The cultivar ’Cherry Ingram’ is notable for its particularly vibrant flower color.CC BY-SA 4.0
