Summary

Ophiopogon umbraticola, commonly known as Bad-Hair-Day Mondo Grass, is an evergreen perennial herb native to the forest floors and shaded stream banks in South-Central and Southeastern China. It typically reaches a height of 0.7 feet (0.2 meters) and spreads to about 0.9 feet (0.3 meters). This plant forms dense tufts of arching, dark green leaves that give it a tousled appearance, hence the common name. It produces small, bell-shaped, white to pale purple flowers in the summer, followed by blue-black berries that are somewhat ornamental.

Bad-Hair-Day Mondo Grass is valued for its ability to thrive in shaded conditions, making it an excellent ground cover for woodland gardens, shaded borders, and underplanting for larger shrubs or trees. It is also used in container plantings and as an edging plant. This Mondo Grass prefers consistently moist, well-drained soils rich in organic matter, and it requires little maintenance once established. While it tolerates low water conditions, it will perform best with regular watering during prolonged dry spells. It is not known for serious pest or disease problems, but root rot can occur in poorly drained soils.CC BY-SA 4.0
