Summary

Opuntia engelmannii var. laevis, commonly known as Smooth Prickly Pear, Engelmann’s Prickly Pear, or Tulip Prickly Pear, is a succulent plant native to arid and semi-arid regions, including desert grasslands, rocky outcrops, and open areas throughout the Southwestern United States and Northern Mexico. It typically grows at a moderate rate to a height of 2-5 feet (0.6-1.5 meters) and a width of 3-5 feet (0.9-1.5 meters). This plant is characterized by its flat, fleshy, oval to round pads that are blue-green to gray-green in color and are mostly spineless, which distinguishes it from other Opuntia species. It produces large, yellow, showy flowers in the late spring to early summer, followed by purple fruits that are attractive to wildlife.

Smooth Prickly Pear is valued for its drought tolerance, low maintenance, and the architectural interest it adds to xeriscapes, rock gardens, and desert-themed landscapes. It is also used for erosion control on slopes. The plant requires minimal care, thriving in full sun and well-draining sandy or loamy soils. It is highly tolerant of drought, requiring only occasional watering once established. While generally pest-free, it can be susceptible to cochineal scale insects. Gardeners should handle with care due to the tiny, hair-like spines called glochids that can easily detach and irritate skin.CC BY-SA 4.0
