Estimated Native Range
Summary
Oreocnide pedunculata, commonly known as Chang Geng Zi Ma, is a shrub or small tree native to the subtropical forests of the Nansei-shoto (Ryukyu Islands) and Taiwan. It typically grows to a height of 8-16 feet (2.4-4.9 meters) and a width of 5-12 feet (1.5-3.7 meters). This species thrives in the understory of moist, well-drained woodlands and on forest edges where it receives dappled sunlight.
Oreocnide pedunculata is notable for its cream and black flowers that appear in the spring, summer, and fall, adding interest to the garden throughout the growing seasons. The plant’s ability to flower over such an extended period makes it a valuable addition to mixed borders and woodland gardens. It is also appreciated for its ease of maintenance and adaptability to a range of soil conditions, provided they are well-drained. In cultivation, it requires moderate watering, tolerating both full sun and part shade, which makes it versatile for different garden settings. There are no widely recognized cultivars of this species in the horticultural trade. Potential problems include susceptibility to root rot in overly wet soils and pests typical of subtropical climates. It is not known to be invasive outside its native range, but as with all plants, monitoring and management are recommended to prevent unwanted spread.CC BY-SA 4.0
