Summary

Ornithogalum candicans, commonly known as Summer Hyacinth, is a deciduous perennial bulb native to the Eastern South Africa. It typically grows to a height of 2-4 feet (0.6-1.2 meters) and a width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters). The plant features a rosette of basal leaves from which emerges a tall flower spike bearing star-shaped flowers that are predominantly white with a green or cream center, blooming in the summer months.

Summer Hyacinth is valued for its striking vertical form and the showy, fragrant flowers that add a dramatic touch to garden beds and borders. It is often used in cut flower arrangements due to the longevity of its blooms. This plant prefers a sunny location with well-drained soil and moderate watering, mimicking its native dry grasslands and open scrub habitats. While generally easy to maintain, it is sensitive to overwatering which can lead to bulb rot. It is also worth noting that all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested, so caution should be exercised if planting in areas accessible to pets or children.CC BY-SA 4.0
