Summary
Orontium aquaticum, commonly known as Golden-Club, is a deciduous perennial herb that is native to slow-moving freshwater streams, ponds, and wetlands in the Eastern United States. It is a member of the Araceae family, characterized by its glossy, lance-shaped leaves that float on the water’s surface, displaying a remarkable water-repellent quality. Golden-Club typically grows to a height of 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) with a similar spread. The plant’s most striking feature is its inflorescence, which consists of a bright yellow spadix that emerges in early spring, surrounded by a green spathe that quickly withers, leaving the spadix exposed. The flowers are not showy in the traditional sense but are distinctive and attractive due to their intense yellow color.
Golden-Club is valued for its unique appearance and its ability to thrive in aquatic environments, making it a popular choice for water gardens and naturalized pond settings. It is low-maintenance, requiring minimal care once established in the appropriate conditions. In cultivation, it requires full sun to part shade and must be grown in shallow water or boggy soil with poor to moderate drainage to mimic its natural habitat. While generally pest-free, it can be susceptible to rot if the water is too stagnant or the soil is not sufficiently moist.CC BY-SA 4.0
