Summary
Osmanthus fragrans var. aurantiacus, commonly known as Fragrant Tea Olive or Sweet Osmanthus, is an evergreen shrub native to Asia, specifically to regions in China, the Himalayas, Taiwan, and Japan. It typically grows to a height of 10-15 feet (3-4.6 meters) and a width of 6-8 feet (1.8-2.4 meters). This plant is characterized by its dense, leathery foliage and small, highly fragrant flowers that are orange to yellow-orange, blooming in autumn. The flowers are often used in perfumery and to flavor teas and desserts.
Sweet Osmanthus is valued for its delightful fragrance, which can perfume an entire garden, and its ability to thrive with minimal care once established. It is used in landscapes as a specimen plant, hedge, or screen, and is also suitable for container gardening. It prefers well-drained soil, tolerates a range of soil types, and requires regular watering until established, after which it is relatively drought-tolerant. Partial to full sun exposure is ideal for optimal growth and flowering. While generally pest-resistant, it can occasionally suffer from scale insects or sooty mold.CC BY-SA 4.0
