Summary

Oxalis alpina, commonly known as Alpine Woodsorrel, is a perennial herb that is evergreen in nature. It is native to the cool, mountainous regions of North and Central America and Mexico, often found in the understory of high-elevation pine-oak forests and cloud forests. This species typically emerges from an underground bulb and displays a clumping growth habit with a height and spread of 6-12 inches (15-30 cm). Alpine Woodsorrel is characterized by its clover-like, trifoliate leaves with three heart-shaped, green lobes. From July to September, it produces a striking display of flowers in an umbel inflorescence, each umbel bearing 1-7 flowers. The flowers come in a variety of colors including blue, purple, red, and yellow, and although the main blooming season is in the summer, in favorable conditions it may flower sporadically throughout the year.

Alpine Woodsorrel is valued for its ornamental foliage and vibrant, multi-colored flowers. It is often used in shaded rock gardens, woodland gardens, and as a ground cover in part-shade borders. It requires consistently moist soil with good drainage and thrives in part shade, mimicking its native cloud forest conditions. While it is generally easy to maintain, it can be sensitive to overly dry conditions and may require additional watering during prolonged dry spells. It is not commonly afflicted by diseases, but overwatering can lead to root rot.CC BY-SA 4.0
