Estimated Native Range
Summary
Packera werneriifolia, commonly known as alpine rock butterweed or hoary groundsel, is a perennial herb native to the high alpine and subalpine zones of the Sierra Nevada and the Western US. It is adapted to harsh conditions, often found in rocky, well-drained soils and open, gravelly slopes at elevations between 10,000 to 13,000 feet. Alpine rock butterweed forms a basal rosette of thick, woolly leaves, which helps it conserve water and withstand cold temperatures. It typically grows up to 6 inches tall and produces an inflorescence with up to 40 yellow disc florets surrounded by either 8 or 13 yellow ray florets, blooming from July to August. The flowers are modest in size but can be quite showy due to their bright color and high numbers.
This plant is valued for its resilience and ability to thrive in challenging mountainous environments, making it suitable for rock gardens and alpine collections. It requires minimal maintenance once established, needing little water and tolerating poor, rocky soil. In cultivation, it should be planted in full sun to part shade and in well-drained soil to mimic its native habitat. Alpine rock butterweed is not commonly associated with significant diseases or pests, but it can be sensitive to overwatering and poor drainage.CC BY-SA 4.0
