Summary
Pandorea pandorana, commonly known as Wonga Wonga Vine, is an evergreen perennial vine native to a variety of habitats including open forests, woodland margins, and rocky outcrops in Oceania and Australia. It is a vigorous climber with compound, pinnate leaves that differ in shape between juvenile and mature stages. The vine produces showy, tubular or funnel-shaped flowers that are white with distinctive purple markings, blooming profusely from spring to early summer (June to December in its native range). The fruit is an oblong capsule containing numerous winged seeds, which are dispersed by wind. Wonga Wonga Vine is valued for its rapid growth, ease of germination, and ornamental flowers.
This vine is widely cultivated for its ability to cover trellises, fences, and pergolas, providing a lush, green backdrop and seasonal floral display. It is also used to create privacy screens and can be trained over arbors. Cultivars like ’Golden Showers’ with yellow flowers, ’Snowbells’ with white flowers, and ’Ruby Belle’ with pinkish flowers offer variety in garden design. Wonga Wonga Vine prefers well-drained soils and can tolerate a range of light conditions from full sun to part shade. It requires low to medium watering, making it suitable for water-wise gardens. However, it can become invasive if not managed properly, and gardeners should be cautious about planting it near natural bushland.CC BY-SA 4.0
