Summary

Panicum bulbosum, commonly known as Bulb Panicgrass, is a deciduous perennial grass typically found in open grasslands, oak savannas, and along the edges of marshes in Central America, the Southwestern USA, Northern Mexico, and Utah. It reaches a height of 2-4 feet (0.6-1.2 meters) and a width of 2-3 feet (0.6-0.9 meters), featuring a bulbous base that gives rise to its common name. The grass has a clumping habit with narrow, linear leaves and produces airy panicles of small, wind-pollinated flowers in late summer to fall. The flowers are not particularly showy but add a delicate texture to the landscape.

Bulb Panicgrass is valued for its drought tolerance and ability to thrive in poor soils, making it an excellent choice for xeriscaping and naturalistic plantings. It is also used for erosion control and as a forage grass. In cultivation, it prefers full sun exposure and can tolerate a range of soil types, provided they have good drainage. While it requires low to medium amounts of water, it is capable of surviving dry periods once established.CC BY-SA 4.0
