Estimated Native Range
Summary
Parasenegalia visco, commonly known as arca or viscote, is a perennial tree native to the montane forests and high-altitude valleys of northern Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Peru. It is typically found at elevations between 1,000 and 3,500 meters, where it contributes to the unique ecology of these regions. This species can reach heights of up to 50 feet (15 meters) with a canopy spread of around 30 feet (9 meters), featuring a rounded crown. The tree is characterized by its compound leaves and spiny branches, while its yellowish-white flowers bloom in spherical clusters and are moderately showy. Flowering occurs mainly during the summer months.
Parasenegalia visco is valued for its hardiness in high-altitude landscapes and its ability to adapt to a range of soil types, although it prefers well-drained soils. It is often used for reforestation projects and as a windbreak due to its fast growth rate. In cultivation, it requires full sun to partial shade and moderate watering. While not commonly grown in ornamental horticulture, it has potential for use in ecological restoration and erosion control. Gardeners should be aware that it may become invasive outside its native range and should consult local regulations before planting.CC BY-SA 4.0
