Estimated Native Range
Summary
Parodia magnifica, commonly known as Ball Cactus, is a perennial herbaceous succulent native to the grasslands of southern Brazil, particularly in the Rio Grande do Sul region. It is a small cactus, reaching only 3-6 inches in height and spreading up to 18 inches wide. The Ball Cactus is characterized by its spherical to columnar shape, with ribbed, spiny, and hairy stems that provide a unique texture. During the summer months, it produces pale yellow flowers that add a subtle splash of color to its appearance. This species is adapted to cool, dry, and temperate grassland conditions at elevations up to 2625 feet and is currently listed as endangered by the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss and overcollection.
In cultivation, Parodia magnifica is valued for its low maintenance and ornamental qualities, making it a popular choice for rock gardens, container planting, and as a houseplant. It has been recognized with the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, indicating its excellence for garden use. To thrive, it requires a minimum temperature of 10°C and prefers a sunny location with well-draining soil. Overwatering should be avoided to prevent root rot. It is relatively pest-free but can be susceptible to mealybugs and scale insects.CC BY-SA 4.0
